There she was…big…beautiful…and BLUE!
Some things never change, and the “beloved blue turf” at Boise State University is one of those things.
Morgan, her friend, and I flew into Idaho…for the Boise State University Soccer ID camp on Super Bowl weekend. It was early Sunday morning, and I knew the girls were nervous. Frankly, so was I. However, the moment we pulled into the university, “big blue” put us to ease. Somehow, it felt like we were pulling up to an old friend’s home.
Once inside, one of the Boise state coaches saw the girls and started to joke with them; he directed them to where they would be training. Let’s just say the training was …INTENSE; ALL the girls playing won my respect that day. (Much more exciting than the Super Bowl…just sayin!)
Fast forward to the player/parent tour around campus. The coaches led us into the training room where they began breaking down the process they go through for each and every girl on their soccer team.
They emphasized each girl would wear a heart rate monitor every day during training; this would show if she was in the “right zone”…aerobic or anaerobic. If she wasn’t working hard enough, the monitor would relay that information and let her know to step up the effort. However, if her exertion had been too much …too many days in a row, the coaches would ask her to leave practice, saving her body for “game day”. They continued with nutrition, stating how crucial it was to not miss meals. They would provide nutritionists to teach them what foods to eat and when to eat them. High protein/vitamin drinks would be provided before they walk out the training doors. Wow!
But here is where they really caught this Momma’s attention. They told the girls because they care for them, they have to put schooling FIRST. Soccer is not the most important thing in life! They will provide tutoring for any subject, so grades must stay top priority or she will not be playing soccer. Once again…it’s because they care and realize the girl’s education will serve a much larger purpose than their soccer ability.
Needless to say, they won Morgan and I over that day..hook, line and sinker! Why? Because it wasn’t all about Morgan ” the soccer player”; it was also about Morgan “the person”. Morgan verbally committed to become a Boise State “Bronco” shortly after the trip.
We are THRILLED for Morgan…just knowing she has a college coaching staff that is excited to train her to her full potential.
Funny, isn’t that what the Lord offers us EACH and every day? The soccer coaches care and protection over Morgan seemed amazing until I compared it to Gods detailed love, plans and protection over our lives.
” For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mothers womb. I will praise you because am fearfully and wonderfully made; this I know!
My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in a secret place; when I was woven together in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be. How precious to me are your thoughts, God! How vast is the sum of them! Were I to count them, they would outnumber the grains of sand–when I awake….I am still with you.”–Psalm 139:13-18
