Honestly, it completely took me off guard. His smile was absolutely beautiful, but not because of his teeth. In fact, I’m PRETTY sure he only had about 5 teeth TOTAL on top. I’m more convinced what made this man “stand out” was the pride he took in his job.
We had just flown into Dallas/Fort Worth Airport and were patiently waiting for the airline workers to come and help transfer Jacoby to an “aisle chair” so we could de-board the airplane.
This. Is. Not. An. Easy. Process.
So, you can only imagine how much it helps when you not only have someone who is kind, but ALSO someone who takes pride in their job. He kept making sure Jacoby was comfortable, and didn’t act annoyed with the fact she was going to take A LOT of assistance.
One could argue this man would have multiple reasons NOT to smile, not to feel the need to be kind, and yet, he was. His full-time job was to help those who could not assist themselves. I remember thinking I will never forget this man…for his kindness and a job well done.
This encounter made me stop to consider how we live our lives.
As we start 2019, where has God placed you? Are you a stay-at-home momma watching crazy kiddos all day or a caretaker of a friend or loved one? If so, then do it with pride…do it with conviction…knowing that the Lord sees great value in your monotonous tasks.
Are you a FedEx or UPS driver? If so, realize delivering packages to a person’s door is absolutely invaluable and your smile and service may be the only human contact they have all day.
Are you a teacher that shows up every morning to 25 PLUS children that need educated, loved, counseled, etc.? If so, remember the impact and difference a teacher made in your life.
Are you a nurse needing to be ready to face whatever walks through the hospital or clinic doors? If so, remember what one good nurse meant to you or a loved one who was hospitalized.
Just like our “tooth-less” airport worker, find contentment right where the Lord has you TODAY! You are not hidden. You are not forgotten. The Lord sees you and values your work, even if the world does not. But you’re in luck! The world doesn’t get to define success: GOD DOES!
So take a deep breathe…find contentment right where God has placed you …and smile, if you think about it…
Colossians 3:17 “And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.”
